About the painting

Referencing climate change, water damage and sustainability, the gold seam that runs across the painting is a tiny section of Juruá River, a 1200 mile long tributary of the Amazon. It was inspired by an abandoned rusted steel frame and NASA imagery of the Amazon basin from space.

Since this painting was made in 2022 The National Geographic and Rolex Perpetual Planet Initiative have teamed up to support communities along the river to develop a conservation model to build a sustainable and fair future for the river and it’s aquatic animals. Click the Along the Juruá River image above for more about the project.
